Gloria J. Hazelgrove, age 93, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Silver Birch Assisted Living in Michigan City.
Born on March 9, 1933, in Payneville, Kentucky, Gloria was the cherished daughter of the late Ray and Dessie (Hardesty) Barley. On February 10, 1951, she married the love of her life, George Hazelgrove. Together, they built a life centered around love, faith, and family until his passing on January 9, 2004.
Gloria was a kind, compassionate, and selfless woman whose greatest joy came from caring for others. A born caregiver, she devoted her life to her faith, her family, and anyone in need of comfort or kindness. Whether she was preparing a home-cooked meal, baking something special for those she loved, or simply offering a listening ear, Gloria gave of herself wholeheartedly and without hesitation. She had also worked in the dietary department at La Porte Hospital, where she continued her lifelong calling to care for others through her work and kindness.
Even while residing at Silver Birch Assisted Living in Michigan City, Gloria continued to brighten the lives of those around her. She was dearly loved by both residents and staff alike and remained eager to help and care for her elderly friends there. Gloria had a joyful spirit and was always ready for a car ride—especially if it included a visit to Olive Garden, one of her favorite places.
Family was the center of Gloria’s world. She treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was deeply appreciative of the close bond she shared with her family, and they lovingly describe her as “the best mom EVER.” Gloria especially enjoyed gathering around the table for spirited games of Yahtzee and creating lasting memories with those she loved most.
In her younger years, Gloria enjoyed fishing and spending time outdoors. She also loved working puzzles and keeping her mind active. A woman of deep faith, Gloria was a member of Holy Family Parish, where her faith remained a guiding force throughout her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Georganna Hart (John) of Syracuse, Indiana; Rick Hazelgrove (Jane) of Valparaiso, Indiana; Kathleen Hart (Thomas) of La Porte, Indiana; and Terry Hazelgrove (Terry Ann) of Westville, Indiana.
Left to cherish her memory are her nine grandchildren, Jenny, Sandy, Doug, Amy, John, Kelly, Julie, Nick, and Ashley; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson (on the way).
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, George; and her siblings Joe Barley, Pat Barley, Mary Hohner, and Geraldine Nuccio.
Though Gloria’s gentle presence will be deeply missed, her legacy of love, kindness, compassion, and unwavering devotion to family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
There will be a private family graveside service.
A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
