Darrell Hunsley

Darrell Hunsley, age 69, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Northwest Hospital in LaPorte.

Born on May 3, 1957, in La Porte to the late Eugene and Arlene Hunsley, Darrell remained a proud lifelong resident of the community he loved. He graduated from La Porte High School in 1975 and spent his life building a legacy that was as colorful and unforgettable as the man himself.

In 1980, Darrell married the love of his life, Pam Webb Hunsley. Together, they shared over four decades of marriage, adventure, and showmanship before Pam’s passing in 2022. Side by side, the two became well-known local icons through their businesses, Cracker Shack Fireworks and Colonel Hunsley’s Freaks and Oddities. Pam, affectionately known as “Pyro Pam,” was the perfect partner for Darrell’s larger-than-life personality, and together they brought excitement, curiosity, and wonder wherever they went.

As the founder and face of Colonel Hunsley’s Freaks and Oddities, Darrell transformed his love for the bizarre into a traveling preservation-focused sideshow museum and performance act. A real-life showman in every sense of the word, he amazed crowds as a sword swallower and “lightbulb eater,” carrying on traditions from the golden age of circus sideshows.

Behind the spectacle, however, was a passionate historian and collector. Darrell owned an extensive collection of authentic vintage circus sideshow banners from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s — rare hand-painted pieces of American folk art created by legendary artists such as Johnny Meah. His remarkable collection was admired by collectors and art enthusiasts alike and was frequently loaned to respected institutions, including the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. He was also an avid collector of taxidermy, curiosities, and oddities, finding beauty and fascination in the unusual things most people overlooked.

Though Darrell embraced the strange and spectacular, his greatest love was always his family. Whether dazzling audiences beside his beloved wife “Pyro Pam,” hunting for rare circus treasures, or proudly spoiling his grandchildren, Darrell lived life boldly, creatively, and entirely on his own terms.

Surviving are his daughters, Kyra Hunsley (Stephanie Knabensue) and Samantha Jones (Mike); brother, Stephen Hunsley; and six beloved grandchildren, Mariah Jones, Macaiah McGlothlin, Wesley Knabensue, Maverick Jones, Zen Matthews, and Chance Knabensue.

No services are planned at this time.

Though the curtain has fallen on Colonel Hunsley’s final show, his stories, spirit, and celebration of the wonderfully weird will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
