Halina Miziniak, 78, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Friday, May 15, 2026, at 7:06 pm in her son's home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, May 22, 2026, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN, with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm on Thursday, and 8:30 am - 9:30 am Friday, at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN.
Halina was born on August 7, 1947, in Coburg, Germany. Marianna (mother), after surviving the atrocities of the Nazi prison camps and being recently widowed, was committed to giving Halina a life free of such evil. They fled Europe on a ship to New York in 1951. Making their way to Chicago, she started kindergarten without knowing any English. She eventually graduated in 1969 from the University of Illinois with her first degree, Bachelor of Science in Nursing. On November 1, 1969, in Chicago, IL, she married Philip Miziniak, who preceded her on April 24, 2021. After many years in nursing, she earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Purdue Calumet. For the rest of her career, she taught the next generations of nurses as an Associate Professor of Nursing at Purdue University Northwest until her retirement in 2012.
She was a former member of the American Nursing Association and the National League for Nursing.
Surviving are two sons, Philip (Kaye) Miziniak of Iron Mountain, Michigan, and Edmund (Ina Tatarova) Miziniak of Chicago, IL; three grandchildren, Emily Miziniak, Kathryn Miziniak, and Philip John Wallace Miziniak. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, who all held a special place in her heart.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jan Janus; mother, Marianna
Apelkowski, husband, Philip Miziniak; and step-father, Edmund Apelkowski.
She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Michigan City, IN.
