He was born on December 25, 1953, in Michigan City, IN, to Henry and Betty (Wolfe) Zawacki. Tom was a proud lifelong resident of his hometown.
He graduated from Elston High School and went on to serve more than 40 years with the Michigan City Fire Department, retiring in 2019 as Battalion Chief. His dedication, leadership, and service to the community were a source of pride for his family and all who served alongside him.
Tom loved spending time with his family and friends and brought joy and humor to every gathering. He was an avid bowler who achieved multiple 300 perfect games. He enjoyed cooking for the people he loved, listening to Motown music, cheering on Notre Dame Football and the Chicago Cubs, and exploring local farmers' markets in the summer. Some of his fondest memories came from family vacations to Daytona Beach, a tradition he cherished for many years.
Tom is survived by his sons, Joel (Ellen) of Indianapolis and Matthew of Michigan City; his longtime partner, Renee Bauer of Michigan City; his sisters, Kathleen Miller (late husband Jon) of Rolling Prairie and Laurie (Ralph) Baker of Racine, Wisconsin; his grandsons, Jack and Ethan; and three nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Christine Zick.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Tom’s life on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the St. Joseph Young Men's Society, 2001 Franklin St., Michigan City, IN, from 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, is handling arrangements.
