John R. “Hippy” McDonald, 63, of New Carlisle, IN, passed away July 4, 2025, at the University of Chicago Medicine, in Chicago, IL.
John was born on June 14, 1962, to the late John “Mac” and Dolores (Thompson) McDonald.
Along with his parents, John is preceded in death by a sister, Doretta L. Burkhart, and nephew, Richard D. Parker, Jr.
John attended and graduated from Washington High School in South Bend, IN, in 1981. John spent most of his career employed with the St. Joseph County Parks Department until he retired.
John is survived by his son, Jeremiah McDonald of South Bend, IN, and two step-daughters, Loralie Darnell and Samantha Riehle of La Porte, IN; his sisters, Kathy (James) Nova of La Porte, IN, and Karen (Erine) Manges of South Bend, IN, Nephews, John “Willie” Hersom, Daniel Hersom and Nieces, Krystal and Tiffany Parker along with several great nieces and nephews.
John was a naturalist and loved spending his time in the parks. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and birdwatching.
One of his favorite places was on his porch, overlooking Hudson Lake. John enjoyed boating, swimming, and floating down the river on rafting trips. He was a photographer, he threw pottery, and carved wood. John loved travel and would go on his walkabouts all over the county, making friends everywhere he went. There was no match for his sense of
humor. He was known for his jokes, quick wit, and brutal honesty.
A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, July 15, 2025, from 4 pm to 8 pm (CST) at Hudson Lake Tavern at 7896 N. Walker Rd., New Carlisle, IN 46552.
