Debra K. Hoops, 70, of La Porte, IN, passed away on Sunday, February 9, 2025, at Northwest Health-La Porte.  Debra was born on September 14, 1954, in La Porte, IN, to Edward and Evelyn (Young) Schmidt.

 

On October 24, 1981, she married Jesse Ray Hoops, Jr. who preceded her in death on September 7, 2015.  Surviving are her 2 children, Ada Hoops and Sean Hoops; brothers, Raymond Schmidt of Zephryllis, FL and Roger (Judith) Schmidt of Michigan City; sister-in-law, Janet Schmidt; as well as many nieces and nephews.  She was an adopted mom and grandma, "Oma", to many.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Robert Schmidt; and sister, Kay Schmidt.

 

Debra worked as a nurse for 40+ years at numerous facilities.  She obtained her LPN license in 1979 and later her RN license in 1983.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Dennis Meyer officiating.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until the time of the service on Tuesday.  A private family burial will take place at Beatty's Corner Cemetery in Michigan City at a later date.
