Mariann G. Midlar

Mariann G. Midlar, November 16, 1948-February 4, 2025.

Mariann G. Midlar, 76, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home, on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born November 16, 1948, in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of James Abraham Garfield Midlar and Rae Beatrice (Slocum) Midlar.

Mariann, a lifelong resident of the area, was a baptized Episcopalian. Mariann was the first woman officer and patrolwoman at the La Porte County Sheriff's Department, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of women in law enforcement. She also patrolled at Purdue NW, Westville, IN, while she attended college, achieving academic excellence and being recognized on the Dean's List.  She was a proud member of La Porte’s first 911 dispatch crew, a vital service that has helped countless residents during emergencies. Her work in this area exemplified her dedication to the safety and well-being of her community. Mariann's passion for service extended beyond her professional life. She was an active 4-H volunteer with a focus on poultry. As a member of the Gleaner Life Insurance Society Rolling Prairie Arbor, she participated in efforts that uplifted and supported local initiatives. Mariann also volunteered for Relay for Life, contributing her energy and compassion to cancer awareness and support. In her personal life, Mariann enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She had a talent for making plastic canvas crafts and her love for her many pets, especially Maggie, was unbounded.  Above all, Mariann cherished her family, particularly her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whom she adored. 

She is survived by her two daughters, Jackie (Jeff Thompson) Masterson of La Porte, IN, Connie (Dan) Lipscomb of La Porte, IN; sister, Margaret Hakes of Kingsbury, IN; five grandchildren, Drew Lipscomb, Tiffany Ransom, Sarah Byer, Mitchell (Aubree Branch) Byer, Jacob (Brittany Pieniazek) Byer; three great-grandchildren, Aubriella Byer, Ottis Byer, Isla Byer, and many nieces and nephews. 

Mariann was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, James Midlar, and Jeffery Midlar; son, Christopher Masterson, and grandson, Thomas Lipscomb.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN, where a Gathering of Family and Friends for a viewing will take place, Friday, February 7, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. CST. Cremation will take place. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the family in her honor.
