Douglas W. Penfold, 66, Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Sunday, January 12, 2025, at 4:25 pm in Franciscan Health - Michigan City.
Private services will be conducted later. The Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Michigan City, IN, is handling arrangements.
He was born April 15, 1958, in Michigan City, IN, to the late Dorothy (Will) Hall and late William Penfold. His mother and late stepfather Ray Hall lovingly raised him. Their influence helped shape him into the remarkable man he became - a devoted father, a hardworking provider, and a loyal friend to all who knew him.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth (Anthony) Schofield of La Porte, IN; son, Maxwel (Anna Lapham) Penfold of Michigan City, IN; two grandchildren, Halle Hood and Anthony "Buddy" Hood; sister, Kay Jalkanen of Surfside, TX; and his brother, James “Jimmy” Penfold of Houston, TX.
Douglas was blessed with an extended family, including aunts, uncles, and cousins - those who survived him and those who have passed before him. He held their memories close to his heart.
Douglas had a strong work ethic and a diverse career that spanned several industries. His first job was working at the family furniture store, H&H Furniture in Michigan City. In 1977, he began as a machine operator, manufacturing parts for oil rigs. He later assembled bucket trucks for a power company before becoming a skilled journeyman drywall foreman. Ultimately, he retired from GAF as a forklift driver after 13 years of dedicated service. No matter the job, Douglas took pride in his work and was known for his reliability, craftsmanship, and commitment to excellence.
Douglas had a deep love for music and was a naturally gifted musician, able to learn songs just by listening. He played bass and sang in two bands early on, The Rabies and The Civilians, sharing his passion and talent with his brother.
Douglas was a lifelong sports enthusiast, with a love for baseball in his youth that later led him to coach youth baseball teams. He cherished watching football with his son and developed a passion for golf, playing as often as he could until his health no longer allowed.
But his true legacy was in the way he lived his life. He spent time volunteering at local soup kitchens, always finding ways to give back to those in need. In one of his most selfless acts, he opened his home to a homeless child, ensuring they had warmth, safety, and love during a difficult time.
Douglas leaves behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and love. Above all, Douglas was a deeply supportive and understanding father. His unwavering love and support made him a steady, reassuring presence, no matter the circumstances. His absence will be deeply felt by his children, as well as his brother and sister, with whom he shared a special bond.
