James M. Stephens, 82, from Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, in Michigan City, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 am, Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, Indiana with Pastor William Fine officiating. Burial will follow in Swan Lake Memorial Gardens, Michigan City, Indiana with full military honors. Visitation will be from 9:30 am -11:30 am, Tuesday at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel.
He was born June 11, 1942, in Michigan City, Indiana to the late James N. and Maida (Cooksey) Stephens. On October 17, 1970, in California, he married Betty M. Holden, who preceded him in death on March 30, 1984.
Surviving are daughter Deborah (Ryan Neitzel) Stephens of Michigan City, Indiana; two sisters, Sandra Herald of Maumee, Ohio, and Paula Schulte of San Jose, California; nephews Tyron Stephens, Michael (Lisa) Herald, and Jimmie Schulte; nieces Tina (Brian) Miller and Noel; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother Larry Stephens.
Jim retired as a Sergeant after 32 years with the Department of Correction (Indiana State Prison). He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam. He enjoyed bowling, and participating in many different leagues. He also enjoyed golfing and helping coach girls' softball. He spent much of his time volunteering as an assistant Boy Scout leader.
