Patricia Edna Blumer, August 14, 1933-September 17, 2024.
Patricia E. Blumer, 91, of Westville, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at Northwest Health-La Porte. She was born August 14, 1933, in Gary, Indiana, the daughter of Emmeron John Bittner, who served in the United States Army during WWI, and Josephine (Geise) Bittner.
Patricia grew up in Porter County and attended Chesterton High School, where she graduated in 1951. On July 4, 1952, Patricia married her high school sweetheart, Jim Blumer, in Topeka, Kansas, while he was serving in the U.S. Air Force. Patricia raised her children in Porter County, where she was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Chesterton, Indiana. She found joy and purpose in her faith, actively participating in church activities, and singing with the choir at services and events throughout Porter County. As a self-proclaimed domestic engineer, Pat kept an immaculately clean house and was actively involved in her 5 sons' lives, serving as a den mother in Boy Scouts and being the dedicated taxi driver, driving them to various sporting events. Though often laughingly recognized as "the absolute worst cook", with her husband stepping in to take charge in the kitchen, and her sons taking home economics class in school, she embraced her role as a nurturing figure within her family. Patricia’s interests extended beyond her church involvement. She enjoyed spending time with family, partaking in activities such as bowling, water skiing, and visiting the beach. In 1996, Patricia moved to La Porte, IN, and continued to stay connected with her family and friends, always trying to keep in touch with loved ones. Her legacy of love, prayer, and commitment to family will be remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Pat is survived by her sons, known as the "JoJo Brothers", Daniel (Windy) Blumer of Westville, IN, Greg Blumer of Chesterton, IN, James Blumer of Kendallville, IN, John (Deb) Blumer of Porter, IN; brother, Bernie (Ginger) Bittner of Orland Park, IL; two sisters, Sister Bernita Marie Bittner, a nun, of Milwaukee, WI, Kathleen Kolb of NM; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 2 buns in the oven, and several nieces and nephews.
Patricia was preceded in death by her parents; her ex-husband and the father of her children, Jim; sons baby Blumer and USAF Howard (Ana) Blumer; brothers, Army Sgt. Edwin Bittner and USAF Kenneth Bittner; sisters, Ethyl Nelson, Irene Beckman, and MaryJo Christman.
Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN, where the family will celebrate Pat's life with a memorial service on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. Cremation was selected by the family. Burial of cremated remains will take place at a later date.
