Susan J. Tharp

Susan J. Tharp, 67, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Monday, May 27th, 2024 at Northwest Health-La Porte

 

Susan was born in Valparaiso, IN, on October 7th, 1956, to Dale and Jean (Kaub) Tharp.

 

She met her wife, Leslie, on June 16th, 2000, and never left her side.  Also surviving are her 2 children, Christina "Chrissy" and Dale Tharp, "a traveler of the world"; grandchildren, Amelia Black, Solomon McDannel, Shayla Morton, Irish Morton, James Hutchins, and Gideon Hutchins; sisters, Barbara Flagg of Hobart and Beatrice Foster of IL; brothers, Thomas (Debra) Tharp of Hamlet and Bruce Tharp of Rolling Prairie; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jean Tharp and Dale Tharp; 2 sisters, Phyllis Tharp and Marjorie Mohr; and brother, Paul Tharp.

 

Susan was a 1975 graduate of Westville High School and later became a steel worker, working at Modine, Roll Coater, and U.S. Steel.  She was a Moose member and a previous member of the Peace Corps. 

 

Being an animal lover, Susan was a rescuer of homeless and abused cats.  She enjoyed woodworking and carving.  Susan loved her home and garden, where she often found solace.  She also loved cookouts with her family, visiting cemeteries, and traveling with her life partner, Leslie.

 

Susan was an avid lover of history, particularly the Civil War years.  One of her proudest moments was in the taking of a DNA test, which answered many of her questions.  The test results reaffirmed that Susan was on the right track with her genealogy.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at noon on Thursday, June 6th, 2024, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday. Inurnment will take place at a later date.

 

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, 2900 N. Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
