Carol J. Hoenig

It is with heavy hearts and disbelief that we announce the passing of our matriarch, Carol J. Hoenig, 76, on February 13th, 2024, at Northwest Health, La Porte.  Carol will be remembered for her caring and generous heart, her skill at orchestrating large parties so people stayed connected, and the joy she felt when nearly everyone she knew (or met that day) called her Mom.

Born in Michigan City and a graduate of Elston, Carol (Short) was married to Bob Hoenig for 56 years and had two daughters, Kristina (Darrin) Gurnicz of LaPorte and Danielle (Rick) Davis of South Bend.  While raising two young girls, Carol earned a bachelor’s degree from IUSB, then worked for decades in accounting until her recent retirement.  She also prepared tax returns for many years for clients, friends, and family.

Carol loved music and had a beautiful singing voice.  She enjoyed reading novels, warm summer swims in her pool, and spending time with family and friends in the beautiful backyard.

Five months ago, Mom planted Ice Cream Tulip bulbs that she ordered from The Netherlands and was so eager to see them bloom.  Instead, we will enjoy these rare tulips knowing that Mom had every intention of being here with us this spring.  Because Mom was always here, and said so, every day of our lives.

Carol is survived by her daughters, sister, Laura Steinke, and a long list of family and dear friends whom she cherished.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert & Josephine Steinke, sister, Sherrie Sweet, and many others over the years who helped her create a lifetime of great memories.

In lieu of flowers, please simply keep Carol and our family in your prayers as we begin these new journeys apart.  And take more photos of those you love, be exceptionally generous and kind, and maybe plant some tulips and hydrangeas because they’re beautiful.

Our family would like to extend special thanks and heartfelt appreciation to the EMT, ER, and ICU staff of NW Hospital for their knowledge and dedication to Mom’s care and the compassion they provided to us.  Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.  A private gathering will be held at a later date.

Condolences can be sent to the family at www.LakeviewFHC.com or directly to the house.
