Hershel "Herk" Van Weaver, Jr., 56, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away on Monday, December 11th, 2023, at his home, surrounded by family that dearly loved and cared for him.

 

Herk was born in Chicago, IL, on October 21st, 1967, to Hershel V. Weaver, Sr. and Karen (Simpkins) Weaver.

 

Herk is survived by his daughter, Amber (Matthew) Carlson of Star City, IN; son/brother, George "Alan" (Jessica) Weaver of La Porte; sisters, Lisa (David) Sanchez and Kathy Weaver, all of La Porte; brothers, Michael Weaver of La Porte and Kevin Scott; uncle, Lawrence Simpkins; aunts, Mary Beth Simpkins and Jackie (Joe) Scott; granddaughters, Makenzie, Marylynn, and Macyann; and treasured nieces and nephews, Bryce, Audrey, Cayleb, Elyssa, Kandice, Elaina, and Brielle.

 

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandchild, Baby Carlson; parents; grandmother, Mary Simpkins; and grandfather, George Simpkins.

 

At the young age of 28, Herk selflessly adopted his 3 siblings, to keep the family together after the passing of their mother.  Because of his special bond with Alan, Herk had the honor of growing closer to his three granddaughters, Makenzie, Marylynn, and Macyann.

 

Herk was a Mason for many years.   He enjoyed building scale models of all kinds and running his model group, Herks Modelworks.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, La Porte.

 

A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 22nd, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service on Friday.
