John J. Schaefer

John J. Schaefer, 68, passed away on November 28th, 2023, at Franciscan Health, Michigan City, Indiana. He was born on June 20th, 1955, to Frank and Katherine (Siegmund) Schaefer, who preceded him in death.


He graduated from Marquette High School, Michigan City, in 1973 and received his BS degree from Marquette University in 1977. He was the Marquette Golden Eagles No. 1 fan as he graduated the year the team, then the Warriors, won the national championship-1977.


John began his career as a Certified Public Accountant for the Indiana State Board of Accounts and retired from that position after two decades. He then formed John J. Schaefer Certified Public Accountant, P.C., and spent the next 25 years providing accounting services to individuals, not-for-profit organizations, and a host of all types of businesses and industries. He served as Controller for Michigan City during the Mayor Oberlie administration. 


John served on a number of boards and committees including the Economic Development Corporation Michigan City, the Marquette Foundation, and Members Advantage Credit Union to name a few. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #432 and Phi Delta Kappa Fraternity, Gamma Lambda Chapter.  He was also a Trivia Genius traveling with his team throughout La Porte County and winning a number of events. John loved life to the fullest and was a friend to countless people.
John is survived by his immediate family: sister Joan (Richard) Haviland,  Honeoye Falls, NY, brother Tom and Mary Ann (Carpenter) Schaefer,  Baltimore, MD., sister Marian (Bob) Cline,  San Antonio, Texas, brother Dick Schaefer,  Michigan City, brother Bob and Jayne (Westbrook) Schaefer,  Long Beach, and his Lifetime Love Glenda Snyder Valparaiso. Plus, many nephews, nieces, and cousins from all over the Country.


Mass of Christian burial will be conducted on Tuesday, December 12th, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, 606 So. Woodland Avenue, Michigan City, Indiana with Rev. Jordan Fetcko officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.  Visitation hours will be Monday from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM in the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington Street, Michigan City, Indiana, and Tuesday from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at the Queen of all Saints Legacy Center.
