Mattie L. Dinwiddie

Mattie L. Dinwiddie, 100, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, November 29th, 2023 at the Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka, IN.

 

She was born November 28th, 1923 in Union Mills, Indiana, the daughter of Daniel Webb and Julia (Cox) Webb. They preceded her in death. On July 11th, 1959 at St. John's Lutheran Church in La Porte, IN, she married Gilbert Irving Dinwiddie. He preceded her in death on July 29th, 2003.

 

Mattie was a baby when her father passed away and her mother remarried Joseph Bender. They lived on a farm between Plymouth and Culver. When Mattie was 12 years old her stepfather passed away. Her mother unable to keep the farm moved to Plymouth. In order for Mattie to stay at West High School she went to live with Mr. & Mrs. Richardson who were the custodians of the school. She worked for the Richardson helping with the custodial work for her room and board in the winter and in the summer worked for Senior Home as a cook. After graduation in 1942, Mattie moved to La Porte and worked for Allis Chalmers during World War II. After the war she went in the restaurant business for 30 years, most of the time as a chef. After retiring Mattie and Gilbert traveled and spent 23 winters in Ft. Myers, Florida. They moved to Michigan City in 1992 living at the Simeon Square Retirement Center. After Gilbert's death, Mattie (in order the keep busy) went to work as custodian at Simeon Square. She was a custodian there for 10 years. She continued to help in custodial matters sporadically after her retirement from the position. Mattie was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Michigan City and volunteered their most Fridays to help get out printed services for the weekend church services and the church's monthly newsletter and was instrumental in bringing the real service meal site to Simion Square where she volunteered for many years.

 

Mattie is survived by her niece Suzanne Mahmoud and her daughter Vanessa (Zachary Emmons) Mahmoud; niece Betty Schaeffer and her children Amy Schaeffer, Carol Joy Schaeffer, and Jonathan Schaeffer; Dianne (Ronald) Burger and their children Robert Burger, Heidi Tamada, and Wendy Piasentin; David (Susan) Dinwiddie and their children Julia Dinwiddie, Emily Stuart, Katherine Bonker, Sara Haynes, John Dinwiddie, and Joshua Dinwiddie; Elaine Standefer and Beck Webb-Phillips a niece by marriage; Carol Webb and her children Bradley Webb and Bethany Zander,

 

Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, brothers, Arden Webb and Howard Webb, and sister Catherine Kroening.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Saturday, December 2nd from 10 am until the service time at 11 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church 1237 Coolspring Avenue, Michigan City, IN 46360.  A life celebration will begin at 11 am with Pastor David Solum officiating.  Interment will follow at the Patton Cemetery, La Porte, IN.
