Leon "Sonny" H.  Keller

Leon “Sonny” H.  Keller, 88, of LaPorte, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, November 1st, 2023 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones. 

 

He was born March 7th, 1935 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Leon Daniel Keller and Gladys (Johnson) Keller.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Leon graduated from La Porte High School and in 1957 joined the United States Army, serving in Germany where he guarded the Berlin Wall. On December 22nd, 1957, in La Porte, he married Helen Buchanan, who preceded him in death. Leon worked for several manufacturing plants in the area, retiring from Ugimag, Inc. in Valparaiso, IN. His real love, though was farming, and he owned several parcels in the La Porte area. Leon also was the previous owner of Keller's Limestone Service and part owner of Keller Excavating, where he was a great help to his son. Leon was a La Porte history buff, enjoyed NASCAR, especially #5, Kyle Larson, and collected antique tractors, showing them at various tractor events. 

 

He is survived by his son, Erick (Tracy) Keller of LaPorte, IN; two brothers, Walter "Butch" Keller of La Porte, IN, Larry Keller of La Porte, IN; two grandchildren, Holly (Kodie) Keller-Swank of La Porte, IN, David Mrozinski Jr. of La Porte, IN; three great-grandchildren, David Mrozinski III, Valerie "Sis" Mrozinski, Reid Erick Wesle Swank; his significant other, Donna Brown and several cousins.

 

Along with his wife of 45 years, Leon was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Jack Keller.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Avenue, La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation on Sunday, November 5th, 2023 from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Leon's Life funeral service will be held on November 6th, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. (doors open at nine) at the funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Vale, officiating.  Interment will follow at the Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte, Indiana.
