John Adam Wegiel, a loving, adventurous, and intelligent man, passed away at the age of 85 on Tuesday, July 11th, 2023, at Brentwood at La Porte. Born on October 28th, 1937, in La Porte, Indiana, to Adam and Sophia (Rosinski) Wegiel, John's life was a testament to his strong character and deep love for his family and country.
John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Nancy Schoof, on June 15, 1957, in La Porte, Indiana. Their loving and enduring partnership was blessed with three children, Julie Wozniak of La Porte, Thomas Wegiel of Mill Creek, and Stephen (Dawn) Wegiel of La Porte. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren, Missy (Mike) Jablonski of South Bend, Mandy (Rob) Lower of La Porte, Keith (Amy) Wegiel of La Porte, Brianna (Garrett) Burnett of La Porte, Jonathan (Samantha) Wegiel of La Porte, and Kyle (Jessica) Wegiel of Chesterton as well as 14 great-grandchildren, Cayden, Ahvanna, Madelynn, Laila, Reese, Alyssa, Brynn, Maverick, Calem, Noah, Molly, David, Carlie, and Ella Jane, all of whom brought immense joy and pride to his life. John is also survived by his sisters, Patricia and Rosie, and numerous nieces and nephews, who will miss his wisdom and warmth.
His life was marked by the loss of his parents; his brothers, Gene Wegiel and Leonard Wegiel; his sister, Theresa Campos; his son-in-law, Lanny Wozniak; and his great-grandchildren, Bailey and MaKena Jablonski. Yet, John's spirit remained unbroken, his resilience serving as a beacon for his loved ones.
John's adventurous spirit was matched by his dedication to his country. He served with honor and distinction in the U.S. Navy for over 20 years, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. His military service was a source of great pride, and his experiences shaped him into a man of integrity and intelligence.
After his military service, John continued to contribute to his community as an employee at NIPSCO. He was a lifetime member of both the VFW and American Legion, reflecting his enduring commitment to his fellow servicemen and women. John had a passion for bowling, but his happiest moments were those spent surrounded by his beloved wife and family, whose company he cherished above all else.
