Robert "Rocky" Earl Friend

Robert "Rocky" Earl Friend, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 73 on Friday, June 9th, 2023, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend.

 

Rocky was born on January 16th, 1950, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, to Albert E. and Imogene (Stevens) Friend. As a child, he was adventurous and demonstrated an early love for the outdoors and exploring the world around him. This adventurous spirit and love for travel would continue throughout his life.

 

On February 24th, 2006, Rocky married the love of his life, Bonnie Walden, in a beautiful ceremony surrounded by friends and family. Bonnie survives him, and their love story is a lasting testament to their unbreakable bond and shared passion for life.

 

Rocky was a proud father to his children, Julie (Darrell) Sims-Cash of La Porte, John Sims, Terri (James) Garringer of Hegins, PA, and Brandi (Dustin) Harris of Sulphur, LA. He was also a doting grandfather to his 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Rocky's gentle nature and selfless love made him a role model for his family, shaping the lives of all who had the privilege of calling him their father and grandfather.

 

In addition to his wife and children, Rocky is survived by his siblings, Diania (Jobie) Franks of Mill Creek and Billy Ray (Linda) Friend of North Liberty, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Chad Friend.

 

Rocky proudly served his country in the United States Army, a testament to his bravery and unwavering dedication to his fellow citizens. His service is a source of deep pride for his family and friends, reflecting the courageous and selfless spirit that defined his life.

 

Following his time in the United States Army, Rocky worked as a foundry Core Maker before retiring. In his leisure time, he enjoyed riding and caring for his Harley-Davidson, attending festivals and car shows with his Wife.  His passion for life and adventure shone through in every aspect of his existence, making him an inspiration to those who knew him.

 

Cremation has taken place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center in La Porte. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 15th, 2023, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Friends and family are invited to gather for a time of visitation from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
