Shirley Ann Basinger, 82, of New Buffalo, MI, passed away in her home surrounded by her beloved family on Thursday – April 27th, 2023. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sommerfeld Chapel – 15 North Barton Street, New Buffalo, MI.

 

Shirley was born on April 9th, 1941 in Michigan City, IN to the late Jack and Irene (Batzel) Salat. On Oct. 8th, 1960 at St. Mary of the Lake Church in New Buffalo she married John William Basinger.

 

She was a life-long member of the Saint Mary’s Church, and was also a member of the Rosary and Altar Society. Shirley was a creative soul, and enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening and loved decorating and having family and friends for the holidays. She was an accepting friend to all. Shirley was especially adored by her family, and was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

 

Shirley is survived by her husband John -of over 62 years; her children Daniel Basinger of New Buffalo, Anthony (Nancy) Basinger of LaPorte, Mark (Trish) Basinger of LaPorte, Julie Schavey of Chesterton and Tammy (Greg) Hutcheson of Grand Haven; grandchildren – Brad, Ashley, Casey, Samantha, Brenna, Spencer, Jacob, Ryan, Holly and Delaney; twenty great grandchildren; brothers – James (Jackie) Salat of Michigan City and Thomas (Anita) Salat of Michigan City; and sisters – Sandra Church of LaPorte and Stella (Don) Schweizer of Michigan City. She is preceded in death by brothers – Richard Batzel and Andrew Salat.

 

Visitation with the family is on Monday – May 1st, from 4:00-7:00pm, at Sommerfeld Chapel in New Buffalo. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday – May 2nd, 11:00am, at Saint Mary of the Lake Church, 718 W. Buffalo Street, New Buffalo, with Father Ed Cronin officiating. Burial follows at Pine Grove Cemetery, New Buffalo.
