Hans G. "Opi" Winter

Hans G. “Opi” Winter, 91, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Tuesday, April 18th, 2023. Hans was born June 8th, 1931, in Friederichsburg, Germany to Reinhold Emil Albert Winter and Frieda Martha Ella (Knaak). 

 

On May 17th, 1958, Hans married Irmgard Baer who survives with their children, John Winter of La Porte, Tammy Bryant of La Porte, Linda Hanson, Charleston, Tennessee; grandchildren, Nicole Zaiko, Sacha Gee-Burns, Melissa (James) Kist, Britne Winter, Bree Winter, and Harley Bryant; great grandchildren, Kobe Hayward, Lexi Burns, Mia Burns, Benjamin Kish, Peyton Kist, and Austin Kist; many nieces and nephews; and a brother Horst Winter of Demont, Indiana.  Hans was preceded by his parents, a daughter, Herta Gee, a sister, Margarete Wiesmayer, a grandson, Kody Bryant, sisters-in-law, Margaret Winter, and Anna Bloos, and a brother-in-law, Viktor Bloos.  

 

Hans retired as a welder from US Steel in June of 1962. He was the co-owner of H & H flowers, growing field grown mums until 2000. He was a member of the SteelWorkers Union District 7, local 1014, the GBU German Club, and a former member of the German Soccer Club in Gary, Indiana. You could often find Hans outside working in his garden, fishing, or spending time with his grandkids. 

 

Private services and burial were entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana.
