Mary Lou Nielsen, 96, of La Porte, passed away on Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at Hamilton Communities.

 

Mary Lou was born on February 14th, 1927 in La Porte, IN, to Edward and Mary Eva (Gibson) Peters.

 

On September 21th, 1947 in Hanna, IN she married Erik A. Nielsen, who preceded her in death on September 22th, 2012.  Surviving Mary Lou are her children, Mary Bishop of La Porte, Susan (Kenneth) Pahs of Wanatah, and Peter (Mary Kay) Nielsen of La Porte; granddaughter, Ashley (Jeri) Nielsen of Stillwell; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son-in-law, Robert Bishop; 4 sisters; and 1 brother.

 

Mary Lou was a bank teller for many years at 5/3 Bank.  She enjoyed tole painting, crocheting, reading, and general crafting.  Mary Lou was a member of the Salem Chapel United Methodist Church, where she had taught Sunday School.  She also previously was a Brownie Troop leader and a member of the La Porte Co. Extension Homemakers.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 23th, 2023 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center with Pastor Gene Flickinger and Pastor Tara Keehn officiating.  Burial will follow at Salem Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday at the funeral home.
