Dr. John A. Smith

John A. Smith, MD, of La Porte, Indiana passed away Wednesday, February 1st, 2023.

 

Dr. Smith was born May 1st, 1935, in Bremen, Missouri to Arthur and Naomi (Burtner) Smith. On September 1st, 1956, John married Helen A. Snauwaert in Lafayette, Indiana who passed away in 2012. He is survived by his sons; John (Lynda) Smith and Charles (Jennifer) Smith; grandchildren, Jennifer (Brian) Morrison, Ryan Handley, Adam Smith, Ashley (Quinton) Janek, Jillian (Matt) Samela, Daisey Smith, and Alecia Tello; and great grandchildren, Jozlyn (16), Braxton (12), Brantley (8), Jack (10), Mason (7), Kennedy (4), Beckham (2), Chase (10), Olyvya (8). He was preceded in death by his wife Helen; daughter; Linda, and his parents.

 

Dr. Smith graduated from Chesterton High School in 1953. He was recruited to play basketball for Indiana University where he earned his bachelor's degree, and went on to study medicine graduating in 1963 with a medical degree. He was the medical director of the emergency department at La Porte Hospital, the medical director of the La Porte County EMS, and the president of Maple City Family Practice, retiring May 12th, 1994, after practicing medicine for 30 years. He served in the Army National Guard as a Captain and head of medical services. He raised black angus to teach his children a good work ethic. He was an avid La Porte High School sports supporter. 

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, February 6th, 2023, at Holy Family Parish, Saint Peter Church, 1101 Michigan Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. Family and friends may visit one hour (10 a.m. - 11 a.m.), prior to the Mass at Saint Peter Church. 

 

Burial will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery.

 

Arrangements have been entrusted to Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte, Indiana.

 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 3240 Monroe Street, La Poret, Indiana 46350 or the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, 6490 Broadway, Merrillville, Indiana 46410.
