Helen L. Erickson

Helen L. Erickson, 99, of La Porte, passed away peacefully at 1:40 a.m., Monday, August 29, 2022 at Brickyard Terrace Care Center, La Porte.

 

She was born February 1, 1923, in La Porte, to Wade and Florence (Benson) Wright.

Helen was a 1941 graduate of La Porte High School and enjoyed meeting classmates for breakfast for years following graduation. She was a long-distance telephone operator for General Telephone Co. from 1941 – 1943.  Helen was a billing clerk for Plimpton Press from 1960-1970, and worked for the Westville Correction Center from 1970 – 1985.  She also worked on the Absentee Voter Board in 1988.  Helen was the President of Door Village P.T.C., a charter member for Scipio Township Fire Auxiliary, the President of the Auxiliary Fire Department, belonged to the Carmel League for 61 years and was the Secretary of the Carmel League for 21 years.  She was a member of the La Porte Women’s Democratic Club and a Vice Committee person for Scipio Township 2 for 16 years.  Helen was an avid reader, enjoyed traveling, and dancing with her husband, Bob.  She dearly loved her dog, Oscar, coffee on Sunday mornings with John, family get togethers, and working for the Democratic Party.  Helen was extremely proud that both of her grandsons were U.S. Marines.

 

On July 10, 1942 she married Robert W. Erickson, who preceded her in death on May 13, 1982.

 

Also preceding in death were her parents;two sisters, Norma and Carrie Wright, succumbed to the Spanish Flu during the 1918 pandemic and one sister, Olive M. Ingram; and two brothers, Wade and Willard Wright.

 

Surviving are her son, John W. (Linda) Erickson of La Porte; two grandchildren, Matthew W. Erickson of Manassas, VA and Scott W. Erickson of La Porte; and three great grandchildren, Jordan (Richard) Spradlin of La Porte, Jacob Erickson and Paige Erickson both of Virginia.

 

The family will observe a private remembrance at Carmel Cemetery at a later date.  Cremation will take place.  Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte (219) 362-3100 is caring for the arrangements.

To know Helen was to love her.  She was much more than just a neighbor in Pinola.  She was like a mother to many and like a grandmother to the younger generations.
