Edward Gene Cisler

Edward Gene Cisler’s (92) soul left his earthly body on Thursday, August 11 2022 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA.

Ed was born March 30, 1930 in Berwyn Illinois to Edward and Mae (Polak) Cisler and lived a long, full life.

Throughout his life Ed charmed friends and strangers alike with his sweet smile, quirky sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge of the world. He was an admirer of strong women and a feminist ahead of his time.  He loved his books and his furry friends, was an avid bird watcher, and a voracious consumer of world history, culture and religion.

He was known as an enemy of squirrels and an inveterate user of duct tape and black sharpies.  Ed’s careers ran the gamut from Archaeologist to Librarian to Factory worker to Stay-At-Home Dad, and he even discovered an asteroid while working at an observatory in New Mexico.

Ed spent over 30 years tinkering his Michigan City Garden to perfection, and spent the last 4 years helping his youngest daughter and her husband cultivate a new garden in Medford, Massachusetts where they all lived together.  Loved ones may find it comforting to know that Ed did not suffer, and in fact spent his last day on this earth like he spent most days: going for a walk, working in the garden, and eating too much lasagna and ice cream.

Ed was preceded in death by the love of his life, Miriam Genevive (Balady) Cisler and his sisters Eleanor Peterson and Violet Zurek.  He is survived by his son, Matthew (Julie) Cisler, daughter Leora Cisler, daughter Laura (Raja) Cisler, granddaughter Kennedy Saich, grandson Justin Saich and cat Idly.  If you feel compelled to send flowers or food, his family asks instead that you make a donation to the Michiana Humane Society, Independent Cat Society, Fried’s Cat Shelter, or your favorite animal charity.

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Monday, March 22 from 11 AM until 1 PM (CST).  A private service will be held at 1 PM with interment will follow at the Greenlawn Cemetery, Michigan City, Indiana.
