Stephen Shaffer

Stephen Shaffer, 60, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Northwest Health-La Porte, surrounded by family.

 

He was born March 18, 1962 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Barbara Ann Meister Shaffer.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Stephen graduated from La Porte High School.  On June 13, 1981, at the 1st Christian Church of La Porte, he married the love of his life, Tamera Sue (Kraus) Shaffer, who survives. Stephen loved his career working for The Tree Man, eventually becoming their Arborist and teaching healthy plant care.  He served on the Tree Commission for La Porte and was working with his granddaughter and the mayor on a project to curb bullying in the schools.  Stephen was also a Scout leader for his son as he was growing up. Being outdoors was important to him and he enjoyed camping, hunting, gardening, woodworking and fishing, particularly his fishing trips to Canada. Stephen looked forward to his monthly poker game with the guys or sitting around the campfire with family, listening to the Grand Ole Opry. He would do anything for anybody and took pride in helping his neighbors and working on projects with his beloved grandchildren. Stephen believed in learning from your mistakes and he was known to say, "If you're gonna be stupid, you gotta be tough".

 

Along with his wife, Tami, Stephen is survived by his son, Scotty James (Kylie) Shaffer of La Porte, IN; two brothers, Kirk (Stacy) Shaffer of Kingsford Heights,IN and Brian  Shaffer of Michigan City, IN; two sisters, Jackie (Robert) Lee of La Porte, IN and Petra  Heeg of La Porte, IN; four grandchildren, Holly Shaffer, Elizabeth Shaffer, Allison Shaffer and Parker Keehn.

 

Stephen was preceded in death by his mother.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing on Friday, August 12, 2022 from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. with a service immediately following at 6:00.  Cremation will take place, with burial of cremated remains at Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date.
