James Arthur Swanson

James Arthur Swanson, 84, ofNew Carlisle, Indiana, passed away Sunday July 31, 2022 at his home, surrounded by his family

 

He was born April 27, 1938 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Joseph Swanson Sr. and Dorothy (Davis) Swanson.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, James served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era, serving on the USS Sierra. He worked as a draftsman for Joy Manufacturing and AEP Power company, retiring from AEP in 1998. James loved gardening and canning the fruits and vegetables he grew.  He also enjoyed fishing, from canoes on smaller lakes like Hudson Lake to large charter boats on Lake Michigan. James enjoyed sports, especially the Cubs and Fighting Irish, where he volunteered for the New Carlisle Methodist Church's concession stand at the Notre Dame Football Stadium.

 

He is survived by his two sons, Michael Swanson of South Bend, IN, Roger (Becky) Swanson of TN; daughter, Cynthia Short of New Carlisle, IN; brother, William (Betty) Swanson Jr. of Rolling Prairie, IN; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

 

James was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gerald Swanson, sisters, Katherine Shoemaker, Marjorie Kroening, and Sharon McDonald.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends for a viewing on Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, followed by a Funeral Service at noon and procession to the Lamb’s Chapel Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered. All times are central standard time.
