Norma Jean Jones

Norma Jean Jones, September 26, 1941-January 24, 2022,  80, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday January 24, 2022 at South Bend Memorial Hospital in South Bend, IN.

 

She was born September 26, 1941 in La Porte, Indiana, the daughter of Norman Simcox and Berniece (Janzaruk) Simcox.

 

A lifelong resident of the area, Norma received her Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education and was a home economics teacher at Dickinson Middle School in South Bend, retiring in 2004 after over 30 years. A member of the Michigan City Free Methodist Church, she was an adult Sunday School teacher, the current mission’s director, on the board of administration, a delegate to the conference and was on the board of stewards, to name a few.   Norma was on the board of Fellowship Fest of La Porte County and her special project this year was to collect children's book for distribution. She also loved gardening, sold flowers at the Farmer's Market in Michigan City and was an avid supporter of artists, crafters and craft shows. She enjoyed family fishing trips each summer to Clear Lake in Buchanan, Michigan. Norma loved cats, especially her beloved Tommy.She married Francis "Al" Jones in 1968 and was a wonderful step-mother to his four children. Norma brought love and laughter to her family and lifelong friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

 

Norma is survived by three children, Douglas (Betsy) Jones, Brenda (Bruce) Poer, Gregory (Dawn) Jones; daughter- in- law, LaTreva Jones; uncle, Edwin Simcox; 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jack Simcox and son Stephen Jones.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN.  A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Michigan City Free Methodist Church, 3001 Ohio St., Michigan City, IN., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Joshua Kahn, officiating.  Cremation will take place, with the interment of cremated remains at Pine Lake cemetery at a later date.

 

Because of Norma's last act of generosity, in lieu of flowers, guests are asked to bring a children's book to donate in her honor, or a cash donation for books to be purchased, addressed to the church.
