Richard Shoffner

Richard Shoffner, 91, of Hamlet, passed away on Monday, December 20, 2021 at Northwest Health - La Porte.

 

Richard was born on March 3, 1930 in La Follette, TN, to Rose Sterling and Hiley Katherine (Hill) Shoffner.

 

On January 30, 1958 in La Follette, TN, he married Betty Lou Evans who preceded him in death.  Surviving are his twin daughters, Karen (Robert) Davis of Phoenix, AZ and Sharon (Jerry) Ratliff of Rolling Prairie; 5 grandchildren, Richard (Meghan) Gray of Queen Creek, AZ, Ryan Gray of Phoenix, AZ, Michael Gray of Denver, CO, Ross Ratliff of Rolling Prairie, and Deanna (Kirk Vincent) Ratliff of Osceola; 3 great-grandchildren, Clark Nicholas, Addison Rose and Stella Lynn; 3 siblings, Della (Charles) Parrish of Hamlet, Helen Hatchel of La Porte, and Viola Frederick of La Follette, TN; numerous nieces and nephews; and other loving family members and friends.

 

He was preceded by his parents and 9 siblings, Ben, Bud and Berry Shoffner, William "Butch" Martin, Cleo Taulbee, Walcie Wright, Charlie Shoffner, Martha Shoffner, and Charlie Grimes.

 

Richard was an Army veteran and a 54 year member of the Kingsford Heights American Legion Post #434.  He was a welder for 16 years at Oliver's Farm Equipment Company in South Bend.  After the company closed, Richard became a self-employed carpenter, doing the work he loved so much for over 50 years.  He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and tinkering in his barn.  Richard especially loved taking care of his yard, up until his last days.  He was a tremendous gardener and his family, friends and neighbors shared in the bounty of this labor of love.  Each summer everyone looked forward to sweet corn delivery.  Richard also appreciated spending time reminiscing with his many friends and family.  His pride and joy were his twin daughters, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.

 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center.  Burial will follow at Kingsbury Cemetery.

 

A time of visitation will be held from 4 -7 pm  on Tuesday, December 28, 2021 and from 10 am until the time of the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.  The family respectfully requests the wearing of masks for all in attendance.
