James Harness

James Harness, 76, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Sunday, June 20, 2021 at Northwest Health-La Porte after enjoying a great day with his family on Father’s Day. 

 

He was born January 2, 1945 in La Porte, Indiana, the son of Dale Harness and Betty (Tidey) Harness.

 

James attended the Mill Creek Baptist Church. James had a diverse and interesting life. He truly loved fast cars, all kinds of sports even though baseball seemed to be his favorite. He loved watching the Chicago Bulls especially the Michael Jordon era. He was a very good bowler,

playing pool, and the slots at the casinos. James would spend time fishing and seemed to have good luck when fishing in Ohio. He had an eclectic collection of model cars (which he built), transformers, comic books even attending Comic-Con showing off his collection. He enjoyed building with Lego’s, and collected baseball cards. He also was a fan of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. But most importantly to James was his family. He absolutely adored spending time with them especially his grandkids and great-grandkids.

 

On July 6, 1968 he married Sonja (Shumate) Harness who preceded him in death. They were married for 28 years.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Christina (Kevin) Masterson of La Porte, IN; brother, Robert (Alena) Harness of AZ; sister, Ellen Job; seven grandchildren, Lindsey, Adorno, Molly, Michael, Tyler Harness, and Lee and Kelsey Masterson; five great-grandchildren, Mariah, Payton, Amara, Liam, Charlie. 

 

James was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and sister, Carol Rensburger.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, IN where the family will receive friends Thursday, June 24 from 11 am until 1 PM. Funeral service will be held at 1 PM, at the funeral home with Rev. Ron Devenport and Pastor Terry Phillips officiating.  Interment will follow at the Oak Grove Cemetery.
