James Rice

James Rice, 76, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his family.

 

He was born October 17, 1944 in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of Harold Rice and Sophia (Wienek) Rice.

 

On August 20, 1977, in St Louis, MO, James married Robyn Robertson Rice, who survives.

He is also survived by his two daughters, Sarah Rice and her life partner, Rodell Campbell of Mishawaka, IN, and Kitty Rice and her life partner, Matthew Kier of La Porte, IN; one grandchild, Zophie Rice-Campbell.  James was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Rice Biebuyck.

 

James received his Doctorate in Education from Indiana University, then went on to be involved in several school districts in middle and NW Indiana.  In 2014, he retired as Superintendent of Schools for River Forest Community Schools in Hobart, Indiana. Along the way James became a lifetime member of the BPOE- Elks, sat on the board of The Social and Learning Institute and participated in the Indiana Superintendent's Association. He enjoyed golfing and traveling, was an avid reader and history buff, and was the "go-to guy" on trivia nights.

His greatest joy, though, was his family, who he cherished.

 

Arrangements are being entrusted to Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., LaPorte, IN where the family will receive friends for a visitation from 10 - noon on Friday, March 26, 2021, with a rosary at 11:30.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Catholic church at 12:30.   After cremation, burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery at a later date. Anyone attending these events must wear a mask and practice social distancing.
