Steven Lee Smith of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at 1:30 pm in the University of Chicago Medical Center, Chicago, IL.

He was born in Michigan City, IN. to Bradford Smith and Laura Smith of Michigan City.

He is survived by his parents; brother, Jason (Caitlin) Smith of Michigan City, IN; grandmother, Peggie Beilfuss of Charleston, SC; step-grandmother, Sandra Smith of Palatine, IL; three nieces, Sophia, Kendall and Addilynn; nephew, Liam; Uncle Glenn (Carol) Smith, Aunt Susan (Jeff) Scheibel, Aunt Linda Shebel; cousins, Jennifer Smith, Matt Scheibel, Matt Moryl, Angie Moryl, Shannon (Asher) Perminas, Cheryl (Josh) Perkins

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Dexter Smith, Leonard and Eileen Shebel; Aunt Leslie Moryl, and his step-grandfather, Walter Beilfuss.

After graduating from Michigan City High School where he played soccer, Steven worked in retail and restaurants. He enjoyed theater, music, and cooking.

For those that didn’t know Steven, he developed a mental illness in his adult life which challenged him throughout.

He will be deeply missed and remembered for his loving, funny, and caring nature.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 1506 Washington Street, Michigan City, IN with Rev. Walter Ciesla officiating. Burial will follow in St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm Monday and Tuesday from 8:30 - 9:30 am at the Ott/Haverstock Funeral Chapel, 418 Washington St., Michigan City, IN. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 pm Monday in the funeral chapel.
