Stroller Accident Leads to Neglect Charge

(Westville, IN) - She wasn’t behind the wheel of a car, but she was allegedly intoxicated and doing the driving for her baby. As a result, a Westville woman is now charged in La Porte Circuit Court with Neglect of a Dependent and Public Intoxication.

On September 4, police said a patrol officer found 29-year old Stephanie Rae and her baby on the ground in Westville.

Police said the investigation revealed she consumed a heavy amount of alcohol then went outside and began pushing her baby in a stroller in a parking lot close to her home.  At one point, the stroller tipped over on its side, and Rae, along with the infant daughter, landed on the asphalt.

The baby was not hurt, but Rae had some cuts along with bumps and bruises.

Rae could face more than two years in prison if found guilty of Level 6 felony neglect of a dependent. Public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor, carries an up to six-month potential jail term.

Judge Tom Alevizos is presiding over the case.
