Hoosiers and Their Hooch

The LaPorte County Historical Society will be hosting the Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibit “Hoosiers and Their Hooch” during the month of March. Visitors will be taken through the rise and fall of prohibition in Indiana and throughout the entire country. The exhibit spans the dawn of the temperance movement of the 1900s, the roaring 1920s, and the unprecedented repeal of a constitutional amendment during the Great Depression. The era’s conflicting cultures are demonstrated through colorful historic figures such as Edward S. Shumaker of the Indiana Anti-Saloon League, as well as the bootleggers, moonshiners, and bathtub gin distillers who found their way around the law in Indiana. Guests can also take a look at how the prohibition movement is reflected in current issues. The exhibit was made possible by Kroger.

Guys and Dolls

Considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy, Guys and Dolls ran for 1,200 performances when it opened on Broadway in 1950. It received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics and won a bevy of awards, including Tony Awards, Drama Desks, and Oliviers. Frequently revived, the show has been done with numerous all-star casts, including productions/concerts featuring Ewan McGregor, Jane Krakowski, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Jessica Biel.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball romantic comedy. Gambler, Nathan Detroit, tries to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck; meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for fourteen years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler, Sky Masterson, for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing the straight-laced missionary, Sarah Brown, as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually, everyone ends up right where they belong.

Frank Loesser’s brassy, immortal score makes Guys and Dolls a crowd-pleaser. The large cast features both a variety of ensemble and star roles. With a great collection of production resources from MTI, this highly producible show is a treat for audiences and performers of any age.

Planting Seeds of Possibility

Raised in the Midwest and widely traveled, today Suzy Vance lives and creates in the Indiana Dunes. She is a fiber artist who “paints” using animal and other fibers, creating works honoring our environment: Earth, the heavens, and nature.

Mostly self-taught, Suzy began playing with fiber when her mother taught her to knit at the age of 12. One thing has led to another…knitting…weaving…spinning…in 2007 felting…and, most recently, combining felting with paper-making.

On March 6th there will be an Artist Reception to celebrate the opening of “Planting Seeds of Possibility”. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with light hors d’oeuvres and an opportunity to meet the artist and learn more about their work and fascinating process. Both the exhibit and the artists' reception are free to the public.

Diversity

Diversity by Madeline Shcooley. Madeline Shcooley started painting at the age of 9. She uses her faith in some of her work, re-creating biblical stories into paintings, using tri-color wire shapes on top of the canvas. Madeline uses a curvilinear black, sometimes white, line that is painted with a squeeze-bottle or brush. She really loves how the squeezed method allows the paint to spread and cause unexpected shapes inside and along-side the line, which becomes new shapes incorporated into the piece. She uses acrylic paint, usually in an opaque style, sometimes using metallics to fill-in as accents, giving some of my works the impression of stained-glass windows. I am also influenced by objects and shapes in nature, Lake Michigan, figure drawing, silk-painting, and some abstract designs. Madeline Shcooley’s inspired by the famous artists, Picasso, Klimt and Matisses’ and echos of their styles often show-up in her works.

A new and shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale of depravity, lust, love, and horror. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll’s experiments with exotic “powders and tinctures” have brought forth his other self—Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas, and so the two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who shall be the master and who his slave!
