(Michigan City, IN) - A man pretending to be with local law enforcement is scheduled to stand trial this week. Jeremy Brenman is charged in La Porte Superior Court 2 with impersonation of a public servant.
According to authorities, Brenman walked into the prosecutor’s office at the Michigan City courthouse in January of 2020. The 48-year old Valparaiso man allegedly displayed a badge and wore an official looking jacket from the State’s Attorney Office in Cook County, Illinois.
According to authorities, he asked to speak to a prosecutor about a federal case he was working on. He was allowed inside but soon asked to leave when the prosecutor’s office learned he was a retired prosecutor and had invasion of privacy charges in La Porte County pending against him.
Authorities are not sure about motive but it might have something to do with him violating protective orders for calls he allegedly made to his 27 year old girlfriend’s workplace. Brenman could face an up to two and a half year sentence.
